Natural Skincare Review: the Secret of Oil Cleansing for Oily Skin

Since my switch to all natural healing and my skin and anti-inflammation journey started I have been looking for the best products that are natural but also work. It’s hard to find the ones that are actually doing what they say they are going to do. I look for a list of ingredients that I can understand and I use the app Yucca or Clean Dirty to check products for chemicals, parabens and other common unpleasant ingredients.

When it comes to skincare, it's easy to assume that oil and oily skin don't mix. However, the concept of oil cleansing has gained popularity for its ability to balance the pH levels of the skin, especially for those with oily or mixed skin types. One standout product that I saw being advertised all over the internet this summer is the Living Libations Seabuckthorn Oil. Contrary to common belief, using oil to cleanse your skin can be a game-changer for individuals with oily skin, and I found out why.

Balancing Act: The Science Behind Oil Cleansing

Oil cleansing works on the principle that "like dissolves like." In other words, using oil to cleanse your face can effectively dissolve excess sebum, makeup, and impurities without stripping your skin's natural oils. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with oily skin, as harsh cleansers can often strip the skin's protective barrier, leading to even more oil production as the skin tries to compensate.

I wanted to review the Living Libations Seabuckthorn Oil as I have seen it posted and sold in many physical shops but also online. Seabuckthorn oil in particular is rich in omega fatty acids and antioxidants, making it an excellent choice for this method.

I found that in the summer season my skin changes a lot and excess oil comes from my attempt at drying out the skin or “cleaning out the pores” with drying face masks that are meant to release excess oil. Usually they have had the opposite effect. When I tried this product it not only removed impurities but also nourished my skin. It felt like the oil opened up my pores and did not disrupt the skin's pH level, which is crucial for those with oily skin.

Seabuckthorn Oil: The Cleansing Technique

Maintaining the skin's pH balance is essential as it helps prevent overproduction of oil, which is a common issue in individuals with oily skin. The technique I used was to put some oil on a cotton pad and rub it on my face then rinse the cotton pad with warm water and rub my face with the wet cotton pad. Once the oil had soaked in I would then rinse my face with cold water and leave what felt like the excess oil on my face. If you do not like the feeling of oily skin you could use another cotton pad to wipe off excess oil completely.

Using this product for a short period of time i.e on and off for a period of two weeks helped to keep my oily skin in check. I would not reccomend using it every day as I found that most people do not wash it off correctly (including myself). However, I also tried the highly reccomended double washing method meaning I would wash my face with one face wash and then use the Seabuckthorn oil as the second cleansing product which lead to my complexion feeling super light.

The Benefits of Oil Cleansing

Aside from its pH-balancing benefits, oil cleansing with products offers other positives. It can help improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of acne, and promote a natural glow. The key is to choose the right oil for your skin type.

It’s important to find a balance between natural products on the outside of your body and nourishing nutrition and food that can change your skin from the inside-out. If you have a problem with excess acne also try to focus on eliminating foods that can be culprits for oily skin. Alongside that though adding in oil cleansing and working with your skin's natural oil production, rather than against it, this method can help you achieve a balanced pH level and a healthier, more radiant complexion. So embrace the power of oil cleansing and say hello to a more harmonious relationship with your skin's natural oils.
